Hello, quilt lovers! I’m Jessica from You, Me and Whimsy, back with another heartfelt project to share. This story is about a custom Heirloom quilt I made for a lovely lady named Tracy, whom I met at a summer artist vendor show. Tracy’s quilt is a beautiful testament to warmth, love, and resilience, and I’m excited to take you through the process and the story behind it.
Meeting Tracy
At the vendor market, I had the pleasure of meeting Tracy, who commissioned a custom quilt. She wanted something special, a memory quilt that also served as an heirloom piece. We discussed the design, and I began working on it with great anticipation and joy.
The Quilt Design
Tracy and I decided on a patchwork design using triangular shapes. While I didn’t include the footage of the design samples this time, I followed a similar process to my previous projects. The key to this quilt was incorporating three shirt jackets that her father had given her. These jackets symbolized warmth and care during her battle with illness and her journey as an organ transplant survivor.
Preparing the Fabric
The video footage shows the initial stages of preparing the fabric. I started by cutting the fabric, trimming stray threads, and cutting the pieces into the agreed-upon triangular shapes. This step is crucial for creating a clean and cohesive design.
Sewing and Ironing
Next, I sewed the patchwork pieces together and ironed the seams to ensure a smooth finish. This part of the process is both meticulous and rewarding as the quilt starts to take shape. The triangular pieces were then arranged into larger squares for the overall patchwork design.
Adding Photographs
A unique aspect of this quilt was the incorporation of photographs printed on fabric paper. This paper-backed fabric runs through an inkjet printer, allowing me to print clear, vivid images. Tracy provided some cherished photographs, which I carefully added to the quilt, making it both a memory and an heirloom quilt.
Tracy’s Story
Tracy’s story is incredibly inspiring. As an organ transplant survivor, she faced numerous challenges and remained resilient and positive throughout. Her father’s concern for her warmth during her illness is woven into this quilt. He always ensured she had his jackets to keep her warm, and now these jackets are part of a quilt that symbolizes his love and her strength.
The Process
Creating this quilt was a labor of love. I used my trusty sewing machine, and when it needed repairs, I had backups, including my mom’s sewing machine. The patchwork design came together beautifully, with each piece telling a part of Tracy’s story. The final steps involved quilting the topper, batting, and backing together, and adding a binding to finish the quilt.
Tracy’s Ministry
Tracy has a wonderful online ministry called “Coffee and Conversation” on Facebook Live, where she shares inspiring scripture and messages. She goes by Lulu Eden on Facebook, and her positive, uplifting content is a great way to start the day. I highly recommend checking it out.
Final Thoughts
I loved every moment of creating this quilt for Tracy. It was a joy to work with her, and I’m thrilled with how it turned out. Tracy’s positive spirit and resilience shine through in this quilt, and it’s a piece that holds deep meaning for both of us.
